What kind of a word is that?
Autochthony! I kid you not. This is the title of a group within the Catholic church. It means "from the ground up" or local grass roots, and refers to a movement that is trying to see Catholicism move away the Vatican hierarchy and into local self governing church communities, somewhat like how our own church at Grace Cork is organised. But...how many "local"everyday people will want to get involved with a movement named like that. Maybe those kind of words impress some people, though I doubt it. I'm all for the Plain English campaign, with clear communication, so we all know exactly what's what. Don't think I'll be using words like Autochthony anytime soon in my sermons. Safe for a while yet lads.
